About SAMU

The Students’ Association of MacEwan University (SAMU) is a non-profit organization working independently from MacEwan University to support students. Our purpose is to enrich the student experience by focusing on their non-academic needs through an array of student-driven programs and services.

The Position

This key leadership position is crucial to the growth of the organization and the SAMU brand. It comes at an exciting time for the Students’ Association of MacEwan University. A new building, a new brand strategy, and a new 3-year strategic plan with a new Vision, Mission and set of Values. We are looking for an energetic strategic thinker who isn’t afraid to experiment. This is an excellent opportunity to get in on the ground floor as we embark on an exciting journey to grow student engagement through the implementation of brand engagement strategies, integrating the building, growing awareness of our services, advancing our marketing capabilities all with the goal of enhancing the student experience. Students come first at SAMU and is reflected in everything we do. We’re looking for the right person to help us prove it to the almost 20,000 MacEwan University students.


The Marketing Services Manager oversees the execution of the long-term strategic marketing plan for SAMU. The Manager supervises other members of the Marketing Services team and manages the implementation and evaluation of strategic marketing initiatives. In collaboration with the Director, the Marketing Services Manager acts as a project manager to ensure timely execution of marketing and organization-initiated projects and strategies.

Summary of Responsibilities

Project Management and Reporting – 40%

  • Manage all strategic marketing projects, campaigns and initiatives and ensure they flow through the defined marketing process, manage timelines and follow up with Project Reviews
  • Provide the organization with useful data, metrics an insight from research and digital marketing analytics
  • Liaise with all SAMU departments in collaboration with creative services as necessary to provide marketing consultation, product/services development and marketing services
  • Provide project updates to the Marketing team and assist in running weekly departmental meetings
  • Oversee the execution of the annual Student Survey and the reporting of results and insights in

Strategic Leadership – 20%

  • Coach and manage the Marketing Coordinator and other part-time seasonal positions, including providing regular Performance Development Reviews
  • Provide marketing expertise, guidance, and best practices to SAMU departments and staff
  • Play an active and collaborating role on the Extended Leadership Team
  • Collaborate with the Director on organizational related strategic planning and execution of initiatives

Communications – 20%

  • Develop an annual digital marketing strategy in collaboration with creative services and oversee the execution of the plan and content (including social media, website development and SAMU email newsletter) with the Marketing Coordinator/Digital Marketing Specialist
  • Maximize owned and earned media tactics to effectively reach the student population
  • Ensure all external communications aligned to the SAMU Brand Standards and SAMU Strategic Goals and Values
  • Lead and Liaise with the Director on corporate documents including media releases, annual report, media kits, advertising package and more
  • Assist the Director in the development and execution of internal communications and staff engagement initiatives

Department Management – 15%

  • Collaborate with the Director to:
  • Develop Annual Corporate Business Plan, Annual Department Business Plan and Annual Marketing Budget
  • Develop strategic partnerships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Ensure future needs of the marketing department and SAMU are met by planning and developing new department functions, positions and structure
  • Manage the execution of the Long-Term Strategic Marketing Plan
  • Develop activities and initiatives to enhance engagement and team culture within the Marketing Department
  • Develop relevant content for SAMUnity (SAMU Intranet)
  • Act as a proxy for the Director at SLT meetings as needed and assist in the operations of the Marketing Department including oversight of other areas of marketing as required

Other – 5%

  • Provide support and expertise to ensure marketing and communication technologies/tools are integrated and performing as needed

Education and Experience
  • A Diploma or Degree in Communications, Marketing, or related fields
  • A minimum of 5 years of related experience
  • Experience managing and coaching staff.
  • Completion of Professional Development Plans for direct reports considered an asset
  • Marketing related designations considered an asset
  • Other combinations of education and experience may be considered
  • A degree or diploma in Visual Communications, Graphic Design or equivalent
  • Minimum 1-2 years of experience with a portfolio
Position Specific Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Excellent verbal, written and presentation communication skills
  • Outgoing personality with the ability to work with and speak in front of a variety of people and groups
  • Superior project management and time management skills
  • Experience writing with CP Style an asset
  • Experience writing strategic plans
  • Experience developing and marketing content (both traditional and digital)
  • Experience using marketing and communication platforms (social media management, project management, email marketing, CRM, CMS, Adobe Suite and Office 365)
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with competing demands and a variety of inhouse clients
  • Excellent problem-solving skills

Terms of Employment

The full-time position features full health and dental benefits (after a three month period) and a great working environment. Regular work hours are between 8:30 am -4:30 pm. Although rare, there are times when some weekend and evening work is required.

Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, SAMU has used a hybrid working model that blends work from home and in-office operations (when necessary) based on specific job requirements and continued, uninterrupted access to essential services for students.  

SAMU provides the necessary equipment to accommodate effectively working both at home, and in the SAMU building when a hybrid model is in effect.

SAMU is currently operating with a hybrid work model.

SAMU Programs aim to provide students with activities and opportunities to learn about wellbeing, as well as raising awareness about various resources available to students, both in and outside the MacEwan community.

Our mission is to provide ongoing and one-off programming with the direct aim to improve the long-term wellbeing of MacEwan students and their community.

SAMU Programs consist of the Student Refugee Program (SRP), StressLess, Sustainability, SAMU Cares, and Artworks. SAMU Programs also runs a variety of other programming and interactive campaigns, blog posts, hands out wellness bags, and organizes activities that fall under two umbrellas of focus – Wellbeing and Community.

Student Refugee Program

Each term, $2.50 of your student fees goes towards supporting SAMU’s Student Refugee Program (SRP). Working with World University Service of Canada (WUSC), SRP funds the tuition and housing of a refugee student for four years. With the help of a local committee group made up of students and staff, SAMU ensures all the sponsored student’s needs are met throughout their time at MacEwan.
